Board of Director News

As reported in the previous newsletter, our Board was seeking to fill a vacant director position.  The president, with approval of the board, has appointed Fred Atencio to fill that position.  Fred bowls on the Thirsty Thursday men’s league, as well as with his lovely wife, Loreen, on the Monday Nite Live mixed league.  We welcome Fred and look forward to his input and support of our association activities.

However, we now have another adult vacancy to fill, that of director Stacey Eichelberger-Burns, who resigned citing job and family responsibilities.  In addition, youth director Sean Pearson has had to resign because of family and school responsibilities.  USBC mandates that an adult director may be appointed by the board, while a youth director vacancy must be filled by the youth committee, choosing from among themselves.  Members of the youth committee may be a youth league member, youth leader, parent, league supervisor, coach, or proprietor, and are elected at the annual membership meeting from a slate proposed by the youth representatives.  The youth representatives are elected (one adult and one youth) by the youth league.

Clear as mud?!  Please feel free to contact any board member for more information about joining the board, or about other volunteer  opportunities related to youth activities outside the league.  We’d really like to see those who are actively involved with our youth to step up and take an active USBC leadership role in youth activities and programs.  This is not only a way to learn about the operations of the USBC on all levels, but also provides an opportunity to serve as a mentor.

Youth News:  Turkey Shoot Was a Perfect Strike

Congratulations to Charles Rastle, Ryan Wood, Rod Nelson, Robbie Delier, and Matt Pendergrass who won turkeys in the turkey shoot held on November 19th.  Thanks to the 81 participants, the Junior Bowling Program raised an incredible $437.  We would also like to thank King Soopers for donating the turkeys.  A special thanks to Rita (Helgoth) and Gail (Tentschert) for all their hard work.  Hope everyone had a GREAT holiday!!  [Contributed by Youth Director Anthony Hassett on behalf of the junior bowlers.]

BVL Charity Fun Bowl Wrap Up

A big THANK YOU from your association board for your support of the BVL Fun Bowl.  Several hundred dollars were raised through entries and raffles for this wonderful cause in support of our troops, both past and present, who have suffered disabilities in defense of our country!!   If you didn’t get a chance to contribute through the fun bowl, your board will be happy to accept any monetary contributions and earmark them in the budget for this worthy cause.  You’re the best!!

Komen Scotch Doubles Tournament (aka Bowl for the Cure)

The next charity fun bowl is the Komen Scotch Doubles on February 11.  This event is open to all adult bowlers—league certification is not required.  Scotch doubles is one game bowled by two people, with each bowler bowling alternate shots.   Three games will be bowled, with prizes awarded, and lots of fun to be had by all.  Your association has made generous contributions over the past few years, due primarily to your generous contributions and participation in this charity tournament.  Please join us again in our efforts to help fund cancer research.  Entries will be available in January.

Open Championship Tournament.

The Open Championship Tournament will be held on February 17-18 and is open to all men and women who hold a Foothills USBC adult membership card.  Entry forms will be out this month.   A team can be made up of any combination of men and women.  This is our first Open Tournament under our merged Foothills USBC Association.  Please show us your support by bringing in your team and encouraging others in your leagues to participate.  Unlike the nationals open tournament (scratch), a handicap of 100% of 220 will be used for our tournament in order to promote a more balanced competition.

Top Hat Tournament

The women’s Top Hat Tournament will be held on January 27.  Although membership is based on competition through the Foothills Association, the Top Hat association is a separate organization with its own officers and management. For more information, please contact Top Hat President, Cece Olsen.

Honor Awards Rule Clarification

Have you heard about the new rule regarding bowling honor scores in a “bowling unopposed” situation? Just in case you haven’t, here’s what you should know.  If you bowl an honor score (300, 298, 297, 11 in a Row, etc.) while pre- or post-bowling unopposed (bowling other than at the regularly scheduled league time), the honor scores will NOT be eligible for USBC awards.  If you bowl at a time other than the regularly scheduled league time, but are bowling in direct opposition against the team that you were originally scheduled to bowl, the honor scores would be recognized.  If your team and another team  in  your league decide to pre- or post-bowl together, the scores still would not be recognized since the teams weren’t regularly scheduled to bowl each other.  All average-based awards will be recognized in any bowling unopposed situation.  Let us know if you have any questions.
